March 2015

March 2015

I’m not sure where January and February has gone, it has just flown by. Perhaps because the weather has not been quite as bad as forecast, we have all managed to keep going with working and training…….not that I’m complaining! Too often those first two months mean snow and ice and frozen arenas. I am so lucky at my base in Shropshire as the surface doesn’t freeze, such a bonus.
A good start to the competition year so far. For the first time in some years, I did not try to qualify for the Winter Championships. I decided to concentrate on training, both my older horses and some exciting young horse prospects, purchased at auction in 2014. So my first competition outing was in February 2015 with Brownscombe Francisco and Colour Trento M, to Allens Hill, where each horse won their Elementary Open class on just over 73%. Then a week later, Percival, a 9 year old eventer who will shortly be for sale, achieved 67% and 68% at Novice Open, his first outing at this level.
Just last week, again at Allens Hill, Colour Trento scored 70.1% and 73% at Elementary Open, more or less completing his qualification for the Summer Regionals – I think, if my maths is correct! At the same event, one of our exciting young horse prospects, Mr Presidente, 5 years old, won the unaffiliated Novice Open class with 69%+ on his very first outing. I was extremely pleased with how he reacted to everything, a very windy day with lots of distractions but he behaved better than some of the older horses who should know better!
My blogging in 2014 was a bit hit and miss, I’m afraid, so here’s a brief summary of the year – extremely busy – some old and new clients and some horses sold (see the Home Page of my website for details).
I competed successfully at the Winter Regionals in February at Novice Open with Cisco and Mac (Uppergraig Black Flyer) and at the Winter Championships in April 2014 on Kath Ackroyd‘s horse Hermani. The aim was always for her to take him over to compete after I had trained him. She is getting some very good results on him. Well done Kath, keep it up!
Then it was on to the Summer Regionals, qualifying Mac and Cisco at Novice Open and Elementary Open and Colour Trento also at Elementary Open. A busy summer, culminating in Cisco qualifying for the National Championships at Stoneleigh Park in September at Novice Open, unfortunately it wasn’t our championships as unbeknown to us he had a nasty virus so lost the sparkle we needed! Nevertheless a 67+% score put us mid field. Only makes me hungrier for this year’s Nationals!
In the meantime, there are all my clients who I really enjoy teaching, all age groups and all abilities. The Wheatland Hunt Pony Club again had a very successful dressage season, with some fantastic scores at the Area Dressage competition. Well done everyone – fingers crossed for 2015!
Following the sale of Uppergraig Black Flyer at the end of last season, his owner Tracey Young, has gone into partnership with Louise Danton and I and we have bought 3 young horses! One is for Tracey to keep the other two are to sell, so watch this space. This is a new venture for us, with the intention of training these youngsters and eventually selling them. A big thank you to Tracey and Louise Danton, owner of the yard where I am based, in helping to get this off the ground.
So, lots of horses to ride and train, competing and teaching….never a dull moment but I love it! (Well, when it’s not raining or hailing or blowing a gale….)
